Before You Adopt

Our shelter has animals of all ages and breeds that come to us for a variety of reasons. Some owners did not have adequate time or funds to care for and train their pet, or had to relocate. Some animals were picked up or turned into the shelter as strays and never claimed. Carefully consider the following before adopting:

*How much time do you have to spend with a pet daily?
*How prepared are you to handle the daily feeding and walking?
*Do you have the patience required to housetrain and use positive reinforcement to train your pet?
*Do you have the resources to properly care for the pet? Additional information about owning a pet.
*Have you considered the cost of food, shots, yearly veterinarian visits, licensing and more?
List of cost provided by Sacramento SPCA.    Adoption Fees
*Note - you must be at least 18 years of age to adopt.
*Have you checked your homeowners insurance policy or rental agreement?

Which pet is right for you?

          * Do you want a dog or a cat?
          * Do you want an inside or outside pet?
          * Have you thought about where Fido or Fluffy will sleep?
Dogs are pack animals; they have a desire to be with their human companions vs. isolated in a backyard 24 hours a day. When they are left alone, they are likely to develop anxiety and boredom and relieve these feelings by barking, chewing, and digging. We encourage humans to have their dogs as inside companions, at least you are home. For more information about which dog might be right for you.

Cats are also best as inside companions. The average lifespan for outdoor cats is two years old vs. the average of 15 years for indoor cats. Outdoor cats are subject to death or injury by cars or other animals. For more information about cats.

Renters:
Some landlords do not allow pets, so we ask you to provide written proof that your landlord permits them.  Also, think about how many times you might move during the average 12 year lifespan of a dog before adopting.

Homeowners Insurance:
Some homeowner's insurance policies do not cover certain breeds of dogs. Check before you adopt.

Kitten and Puppy Vs. Adult Animal:
Kittens and puppies are adorable but are not the best match for every household. Their sharp claws and teeth can destroy property and they require a lot of time to train and socialize. They may not adapt well if you already have pets.
More information about young vs. adult pets.

City or Out of town Residents: You can adopt a pet if you live outside of Sacramento County or in a city that provides its own animal services, but you will need to license your pet with your hometown. Call (916) 875-5482 for assistance.
