How You Can Adopt

Step 1. Select Your New Pet

When you find an animal that interests you on the web site or in person at the shelter, spend some time with the animal to get acquainted. Consider how you will introduce the animal to your pets at home to reduce any territorial issues. There are information packets at the shelter to help you with this process.

Step 2. If the Animal is Not Yet Available for Adoption

If the animal is still in the mandated holding period, up to three names can be entered on a "wait list." On the date the animal is available, at shelter opening time - 10 a.m., the pet will be available on a first-come, first- serve basis to those on the wait list. The animal must show favorable results from the behavioral test before it can be adopted.

Step 3.  Complete Paperwork and Pay the Fees

The next step is to complete the Adoption Application Form (also available at the shelter). The paperwork process generally takes about an hour. Renters should bring a copy of their lease showing that pets are allowed. Home owners should check their insurance policies about breed restrictions.
Note: You must be at least 18 years of age to adopt from our shelter.

Step 4. Bring Your New Pet Home

Once the adopter is approved and the fees paid, the animal will likely stay at the shelter for spay/neuter surgery and can generally be taken home the next business day. If the pet has already been neutered or spayed, you may take your new friend home immediately!

*City or out of town residents - You still can adopt a pet from our shelter if you live outside of Sacramento County or in a city that has its own animal facility, but you will need to license your pet with your hometown. Call (916) 875-5482 for assistance.
