Lost and Found Pets
- Search list of all animals at the Shelter
- Search other area shelters online through PetHarbor.com
- Register your lost pet, list animals in your area
registered as FOUND, and register your breed Interest and
receive email when matching animals arrive at the shelter
for potential adoptions
here.
- Visit local shelters
and check websites to see if your pet has arrived
- Complete the Lost
Animal Report
, and leave the form in the Lost Animal
Binder in our lobby. If you would like to submit a form on-line, email County Animal Care
and ask for an electronic form to be sent to you
- Visit the shelters at least once every three days and do not rely on phone inquiries. Talk
to newspaper and postal carriers and diligently search for at least one month. Check the Incoming Log at the shelter.
- Distribute fliers within a one mile radius of where the pet
was lost. Post at veterinary hospitals, grocery stores, schools,
Laundromats and churches. Flier should include date and place
where pet was lost, type and breed and your telephone number. Do
not put your name on the flier.

- Place an ad in the lost and found section of local papers including the Sacramento Bee
(916-321-1234), Penny Saver, neighborhood and on-line bulletin boards.
- Use caution and take a friend when responding to a 'found' pet tip. Once you are reunited,
remove all fliers. And don't forget, pets wearing license identification
tags are returned home much faster!
- Download the Found Animal Form
and bring it into the shelter, along with any flyers. If
you wish to submit the form on-line, email
County Animal Care
and ask for an electronic form to be sent to you
- Post fliers around your area
- Notify shelters that you have the animal in case owners contact the shelters- most local
shelters have found cards you can post.
- Notify local vets
- Post an ad in the Sacramento Bee Sacramento Bee's Online Classifieds Placement
- If you can't care for the animal:
- Contact area shelters.
Many 24-hour veterinarian hospitals will take animals after hours until a
local shelter is open.
- If the animal is injured:
- Contact veterinarians in your area or local shelter immediately. Most 24-hour emergency vets will take stray injured animals after hours and provide care.
